A 25-year-old former cruise ship employee was sentenced Friday to 18 months in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl on a Royal Caribbean ship that left from Baltimore, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Maryland.

U.S. District Judge Benson E. Legg sentenced Fabian Palmer, a Jamaican national, to one year of supervised release after he leaves prison. Palmer, who pleaded guilty in March, will also have to register as a sex offender.

Palmer befriended the girl, who embarked on the one-week cruise with her family in December, prosecutors said. According to the plea agreement cited by prosecutors, Palmer invited her to meet late one evening and took her into a locker room bathroom, where they had sex.
