Two-alarm fire damages home in Columbia

About 80 firefighters battled a two-alarm fire that tore through a Columbia home on Sunday, according to the Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services.

The county's 911 call center was first notified by an alarm company that an alarm had indicated smoke in the home, in the 6200 block of Cardinal Lane, about 7:11 p.m., said Firefighter Marc Fischer, a department spokesman. A unit was dispatched immediately, Fischer said.

Shortly after, the alarm company made contact with the family, who confirmed there was a fire, he said. The home's four residents all escaped the home, Fischer said. One refused treatment at the scene; the others were uninjured. The residents were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Fire units began clearing the scene about 9 p.m., Fischer said.
