Murder charges brought after Westminster man found dead

Maryland State police have charged David M. Montgomery with murder after a Westminster man was found dead early Saturday morning.

Montgomery, 28, of no fixed address, was charged with first- and second-degree murder, and taken to the Carroll County Central Booking Center to await an appearance before a court commissioner.

Edward C. Zepp, 61, was found dead on the back porch of his residence on the 100 block of West Main Street shortly after 4 a.m. with trauma to his neck. He was pronounced dead.

Anne Arundel County officers responded to calls of a vehicle being operated erratically and found a van belonging to Zepp in a convenience store parking lot in the 4000 block of Ritchie Highway. They arrested the man driving it, and transported him to Carroll County.

Zepp lived alone in the ground floor of a house split into two apartments, authorities said. Neighbors responded to sounds of a struggle at the residence early Saturday and found him injured. An entry door to the apartment had been damaged.

Police said late Saturday that they believe Montgomery had been a roommate of Zepp's for about a year, in 2011 and 2012. He had moves out this past summer, police said.

Zepp's body will be examined to determine the cause of death, police said.
