A woman gave birth to a baby boy at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Sunday afternoon, shortly after stepping off an incoming flight, an airport spokesman said.
Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the airport's fire and rescue department responded to a call of a woman in labor at about 2:20 p.m., said BWI spokesman Jonathan Dean. He said an officer helped the woman to deliver a healthy baby on the floor of a restroom on the airport's D Concourse.
The woman and child were then transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie for further care, Dean said.
The birth created a minor sensation in the concourse, wrote fellow traveler Jonathan Schuler in an e-mail from the airport. It offered passengers a diversion on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, one of the busiest travel days of the year. Dean said he could not recall another instance of a woman giving birth at the airport.
Dean did not have details on the woman's identity.
