Three people were injured, one critically, in a multi-vehicle crash on the westbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Saturday morning, and all lanes were reopened around 1:30 p.m., transportation officials said.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash around 11 a.m., with two men from one car taken to Anne Arundel County Medical Center with serious injuries, and the driver of another car flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries. The occupants of a third car involved in the crash did not require hospital treatment. The critically injured driver, a woman, was stable at Shock Trauma later Saturday afternoon.
More information on the cause of the crash was not immediately available.
One lane of the westbound span was operating eastbound at the time of the crash to handle heavy traffic in that direction, transportation officials said.
All westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of the Bay Bridge were closed for around two hours, causing massive traffic jams. An hour after all lanes reopened, the Maryland Transportation Authority said traffic had backed up for 10 miles in both directions around the site of the crash.
