A young woman died early Saturday morning in a car crash on Route 50 and a motorcyclist was killed after hitting a tree near Brightwater Beach in the evening, authorities said.
Jasmine Yvonne Owens, 20, was pronounced dead at about 3:30 a.m. on the scene of a crash east of the South River Bridge in Anne Arundel County, near Annapolis, the Maryland State Police said in a statement.
Owens was traveling east on the highway, police said, lost control of her car and hit a concrete barrier. Her vehicle spun into the road and she was hit by another eastbound vehicle, causing her car to flip over. Owens was then thrown from the car, police said.
The driver of the car that hit Owens was arrested for driving under the influence, the statement said.
At about 6:45 p.m., a motorcyclist died in Brightwater Beach near the intersection of Nabbs Creek and Francis roads after hitting a tree, said Lt. Keith Hamilton, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.
Authorities believe that in order to avoid another vehicle, the deceased motorcyclist and another motorcycle driver swerved off the road. The second motorcyclist, a 55-year-old man, hit tree branches and was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Hamilton said. Police did not release either driver's name.
No other information was available Saturday night about the incidents.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
