A 30-year-old Harwood man was admitted to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition after the vehicle he was driving struck a utility police in Mayo, Anne Arundel County police said Wednesday.

Police said they are investigating the crash that occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday on Central Avenue north of Shoreham Beach Road, in which Floyd William Pearl Jr. of Harwood was seriously injured.

Pearl's 1998 Honda CR-V was heading north on Central Avenue when it drifted off the right side of road, police said.

Police said they believe that while trying to return to the roadway, the driver steered left, but apparently "overcompensated" and the Honda spun while crossing over the southbound lanes.

The vehicle slid off the road, struck a utility police and stopped off the roadway, according to police. They said Pearl was flown to the hospital in Baltimore. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, according to preliminary information, police said.
