Man charged in attempted robbery, assault on woman and six-year-old girl

Anne Arundel County police have charged an 18-year-old man in connection with an attempted robbery and assault on a woman and her six-year-old daughter Thursday in Lothian.

Police say a 31-year-old woman was walking with her young daughter near the 1200 block of Whittington Drive around 4:30 p.m. when a teen approached her from behind and demanded money, then punched her and knocked her to the ground. As the man continued to punch and kick her while she was on the ground trying to get her purse, the six-year-old girl tried to step in to stop the assault, police said. The man struck the child in the chest, and the mother and daughter suffered minor injuries.

Nearby residents came to intervene and the man fled. Police on Saturday charged Melvin Dejuan Davis Jr., of Lothian with two counts of second-degree assault and attempted robbery in connection with the incident.
