Hit-and-run driver strikes bicyclist, 64, in Hanover

Anne Arundel County police officers are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck a 64-year-old bicyclist in Hanover on Sunday morning, sending him to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department and Shock Trauma Center spokesperson Cindy Rivers, the bicyclist, Stephen Eugene Shenefiel of the 1500 block of Conifer Ridge Lane in Prescott, Arizona, was listed in critical but stable condition as of Sunday night.

Officers responded at 7:36 a.m. Sunday to the report of a bicyclist who was struck on Ridge Road near Furnace Avenue. According to the police report, officers found a Fuji Bordeaux bicycle lying in the roadway and the bicyclist in the woods down an embankment, suffering from serious injuries.

According to the police report, the officers' investigation revealed that the bicyclist was riding south on the right edge of Ridge Road when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Officers say the make of the hit-and-run driver's vehicle is unknown, but evidence recovered from the scene suggests that it may be an off white- or champagne-colored foreign model sedan, such as a Honda or a Toyota. Officers reported that the vehicle possibly sustained damage to the front bumper on the passenger side and to the right front headlight and marker light. The vehicle also is missing part of its right side mirror housing.

Officers request that anyone with information about the accident or the suspect vehicle call the Anne Arundel County Police Traffic Safety Section at 410-222-8573.
