The proposed Towson "Bike Beltway" received support from one of its main components on Thursday, July 12, when Towson University president Maravene Loeschke sent a letter of support for the project to the Maryland Department of Transportation.
"As president of Towson University, I believe this proposal is a tremendous opportunity to more fully engage the university community with the greater Towson area," Loeschke wrote. "Given that Towson is the second-largest public university in Maryland … the Towson Bike Beltway is a desired addition to our university community."
The proposal, which was submitted in early May by the 5th District Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee, seeks funding to establish bike lanes and post signs on a loop around downtown Towson.
The loop, which begins at Towson Place shopping center in the east, extends north to Goucher College up Goucher Boulevard and Fairmount Avenue, and turns south at Bosley Avenue.
The proposed path travels south down Bosley until it reaches Towson University's campus on West Towsontown Boulevard, and extends east on Hillen Road back to Towson place.
"The Towson Bike Beltway will also improve access for the Towson community," Loeschke wrote. "This is an excellent opportunity to connect our university with Goucher College and other local learning facilities. This worthy project will also provide the neighboring communities, businesses and institutions with greater access to our 328-acre, scenic campus and all of our activities open to the public…"
Loeschke wrote in the letter that Towson University has 624 bike racks, and have proposed adding 114 more "in order to reinforce bicycling as a transportation alternative.
"Our bike racks combined with the more convenient and safe Bike Beltway will make bicycling an ideal community option for our students."
Fifth District County Councilman David Marks, who represents Towson and established the advisory committee that submitted the application, said the decision will be made on who receives the grant later this summer.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
