On Friday, Nov. 23, beginning at 5 p.m., local shops and restaurants will offer special discounts and promotions, according to the Towson Chamber of Commerce. Details are available at the chamber website, http://www.towsonchamber.com.
The Black Friday events are a prelude to the larger festivities that begin a week later, when the county's annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is scheduled to take place Sat., Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at Olympian Park, located at the corner of Allegheny Avenue and the Towson circle.
County Executive Kevin Kamenetz will preside over the official tree lighting with assistance from members of the Baltimore County Council and the Towson chamber. The family event will feature free hot chocolate, cookies and holiday musical performances. Sponsors include 101.9 Lite FM, the Baltimore Sun Media Group, Mid-Atlantic Properties and RPAI US Management LLC.
This year's event will start with musical performances by the Perry Hall Middle School eighth-grade Jaguar Choir, the Chapel Hill Music Sensations and the Anna Apicella School of Dance. The tree will be lit at approximately 6:30 p.m. followed by Santa and Mrs. Claus' arrival atop a fire engine.
The Towson chamber will also host the Santa's Workshop, which includes free visits with Santa, reindeer Beau & Tinsel, a craft corner and music and dance performances. Photo opportunities will be available for children with Santa for $5. Santa's Workshop is across York Road from Olympian Park at 1 E. Joppa Road.
