Towson coach Holly West keeps waiting for her Generals to put together a stellar 60 minutes. It didn't happen again Wednesday against visiting Loch Raven, but Towson outplayed the Raiders for much of the game and registered a 3-1 victory.
Towson's Sara Beach scored two goals for the winners.
"We are stressing consistency and that's what we need to keep working on," West said. "If we play our A-game, we can hang with anybody."
The Generals started with a flourish to test the defense of Emily Knight, Amanda Becker and Eve Desmarais.
Towson (4-3) had three penalty corners before Beach, a senior midfielder, weaved through a couple of defenders and beat goalie Cori Kosko from about 10 yards out 5:36 into play.
The Generals kept the ball out their circle for the most part in the first half as Loch Raven (2-2) failed to record a shot on goal.
Towson went ahead 2-0 only 49 seconds into the second half. CJ Reuland fired a shot from the right side of the circle to the left corner.
With 16:47 remaining, Beach scored off a penalty corner. Kaylan Gotwalt was credited with the assist.
Despite being down three goals, Loch Raven didn't let up.
The Raiders' Carmella Ziccardi found the back of the goal 1:29 after Towson's final score on a feed from Courtney McCoy.
About two minutes later, Loch Raven's Alyssa Demski hit the post. Midway through the second half, officials dissallowed a goal because McCoy's shot came from outside the circle.
"We had a lot of missed opportunities," Loch Raven coach Elizabeth Miller said.
