Stoneleigh, Oakleigh elementaries creating Snowflakes for Sandy Hook

The Stoneleigh Elementary and Oakleigh Elementary communities have joined forces to organize Snowflakes for Sandy Hook, which will send handmade paper snowflakes for use as decorations at the site of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

According to a flier for the event, the schools' PTA's will send the snowflakes to the Connecticut PTA, which will decorate Sandy Hook Elementary with paper snowflakes for the students' return after the holiday break.

Beginning Friday, Jan. 4, at 5:30 p.m., and continuing until 8:30 p.m., volunteers are encouraged to drop in and support the Newtown community.

Organizers encouraged people to bring their own scissors, though white paper and other supplies will be provided. Parents must accompany their children to the event.

The PTAs are accepting donations of paper, scissors, snacks and drinks. To donate or to contact the organizers with questions, email

Oakleigh Elementary School is at 1900 White Oak Ave., in Parkville.
