Baltimore-based delivery service OrderUp expanded its operations north from Towson on Monday to Timonium.
The expansion adds 25 restaurants to the company's order and delivery list throughout an area that stretches from Interstate 695 to Warren Road and Falls Road to Potspring Road.
Timonium users can now order delivery on their phone or online from a list of restaurants with OrderUp partnerships that allow those eateries to expand their reach into the community without the hassle of developing their own model for delivery or insuring drivers, general manager of Towson's OrderUp Jim Ashley said. The national headquarters for OrderUp is based in Baltimore.
These new Timonium locations include Towson Hot Bagels, Baja Fresh and Sushi Hana.
OrderUp charges about $5 for delivery, but the majority of the company's revenue comes from commissions it charges restaurants for the business generated by the service, Ashley said.
The Towson branch of the national company receives the bulk of its delivery requests at lunch and dinner with dinner outpacing lunch when Towson University is in session, said Renee Beck, OrderUp public relations and communications director.
The company was able to extend its service to Timonium after experiencing success in Towson with 55 participating restaurants, including Miya Sushi, Cedar Cafe Shop and Seasons Pizza.
"We've had extremely successful delivery times, and we've been able to get the food fresh from the restaurants very quickly to the consumer within the zone that we are currently operating within," Ashley said.
With 40 independent contractor drivers in the Towson and now Timonium area, Ashley said he hopes to translate Towson's success into the new Timonium market.
"We are looking to replicate the same in Timonium as well and allow those [residents to] ... be able to have great food delivered fast and enjoy a great amount of options," Ashley said.
