After an 0-2 start, No. 5 Calvert Hall earned its first football victory of the season with a 28-14 win over No. 10 Franklin Saturday night.
Calvert Hall took advantage of five turnovers by Franklin.
The Cardinals changed quarterbacks in the first half, when junior Kenji Bahar replaced starter Colar Kuhns early in the second quarter. He completed nine of 14 passes for 81 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Calvert Hall (2-1) didn’t need Bahar to do much as the Cardinals ran for 217 yards.
Damien Farmer rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries for Calvert Hall, and Ben Oliver had 52 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
“It was a great team win,” Calvert Hall coach Donald Davis said. “Our defense came to play and our offense woke up a little bit. We came out slow out of the gate against two pretty good football teams and had not played the way we are capable of.”
Calvert Hall scored 28 straight points after Franklin scored early in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
Franklin (0-1) was fortunate to be trailing only 21-7 at halftime after four turnovers and nine penalties for 70 yards.
Franklin capitalized on a mistake for its first touchdown.
Calvert Hall stopped Franklin on the Cardinals' 32-yard line late in the first quarter, but a penalty on a punt gave the Indians a first down.
Franklin then moved 58 yards in five plays for a 7-0 lead. The Indians were aided by two more Calvert Hall penalties, both personal foul calls on the drive.
Indians quarterback Jacquez Adams (18-for-28, 298 yards, four interceptions) capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Steven Smothers in the right corner of the end zone after a 42-yard pass to Jordan Adams set up the score.
Calvert Hall tied it in the middle of the second quarter.
Bahar converted a 14-yard pass to senior tight end Erik Evans on 4th-and-3 from the Indians’ 15-yard line before Oliver bulled into the end zone from the 1-yard line.
On the next drive, Calvert Hall recovered a fumble at the Franklin 8. Two players later, Farmer went up the middle for a 9-yard score to give the Cardinals a 13-7 lead with 4:41 remaining.
They then forced the Indians’ fourth first-half turnover late in the second quarter on an interception by Dionte Austin before Bahar found Lawrence Cager in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown to give Calvert Hall a 20-7 lead with 24 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Cardinals took advantage of another turnover by Franklin late in the third quarter when Micah Keels intercepted Adams.
Calvert Hall drove 45 yards in six plays and Kevin Nickel finished it off with a 2-yard run.
Franklin had a chance to score early in the fourth quarter when Adams and Smothers teamed up for a 63-yard pass, but Smothers fumbled the ball for the fifth Franklin turnover.
Franklin trimmed the lead to 28-13 with 2:14 remaining in the fourth quarter on an Adams’ 4-yard run.
