Loch Raven routs Pikesville in Class 2A-1A girls lacrosse final

Loch Raven won its fifth straight Class 2A-1A North Region final with a 20-7 girls lacrosse victory over Pikesville in Towson Wednesday. The Raiders advance to play Winters Mill in the state semifinals either Friday or Saturday at Bel Air High School.

Winters Mill has eliminated Loch Raven from the postseason in each of the last three years, including the final four the past two and the state final in 2010.

The Raiders, though, had no trouble against Pikesville. Loch Raven (9-6) got three goals each from Sammie Knapp, Courtney Genovese, Lindsey Wagner and Alexis Corbitt. Knapp also contributed three assists.

Raiders coach Tracy Hanley had been worried about her team's offense since losing University of Vermont recruit and leading scorer Meredith Moore (46 goals, 19 assists) to a severe knee injury in the regular-season finale on May 3 against Eastern Tech.

But Loch Raven got on a roll early against Pikesville (7-8).

The Raiders led 5-0 lead after five minutes as Wagner and Knapp each had two goals during that stretch.

Loch Raven led 9-0 by the middle of the first half and when Corbitt scored her third goal with 6:02 remaining it put the Raders up, 11-1.

There was a running clock for the rest of the game.

The Raiders held a huge advantage in shots (34-8) and draws (20-7).

"People are really stepping up and showing what they can do without having that anchor (Moore) down low," Hanley said.

Pikesville trailed 17-1 midway through the second half before scoring six of the last nine goals.

Alex Shearer led the visitors with three goals and Lacey Janofsky added two.

"They're explosive and do a good job of double- and triple-teaming everywhere," said Pikesville coach Andrew Heller, whose team lost to Loch Raven, 20-9, in the regular season.  "It creates turnovers and panic."
