Seniors and baby boomers mark expo's silver anniversary

The Baltimore County Baby Boomer Expo and Senior Expo 2012 will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Thursday, Oct. 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the State Fairgrounds, 2200 York Road, Timonium.

The two-day event, which is marking its silver anniversary, showcases information, resources, products and services for seniors, caregivers and family members.

The expo will include some 250 exhibitors and vendors, as well as a silent auction, free health screenings and more. Entertainment will include performances by The Fabulous Hubcaps (3-6 p.m. on Wednesday) and Jr. Cline and The Recliners (2-4 p.m. on Thursday).

Also available will be flu shots and pneumonia vaccines, provided by the Baltimore County Department of Aging and Maxim Health Services. The shots and vaccines will be provided at no cost for Medicare B beneficiaries and Bravo Health members.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a flu shot if you are over 50 or have high blood pressure, an irregular heartbeat, a history of stroke or heart attack, a chronic respiratory disorder, diabetes, a compromised immune system or anemia.

The expo will feature an exhibit of artwork created by county seniors. The art was part of a contest challenging older residents to "Remember the Past, Celebrate the Present and Energize Your Future."

Works of photography, drawing, painting, fabric and woodwork will be shown. Expo visitors can cast their votes for "people's choice" awards.

Admission to the expo is $2 or two cans of non-perishable food. Visitors will receive a silver anniversary tote with paid admission, courtesy of BGE and GBMC. Proceeds from the Baby Boomer/Senior Expo support the Fund for Needy Seniors.
