Lutherville: Youngsters get hooked on fishing at Springlake Park

Youngsters picked up some pointers from experienced fishermen from the Baltimore Reservoir Metro Anglers before competing in a Fishing Derby on June 2 at Springlake Park in Cockeysville.

Sponsored by the Lutherville-Timonium Recreation Council, this annual event was open to children ages 4 through 15.

Congratulations to the following winners for the largest fish — Avery Domaquin in the ages 4 to 6 division; Tavin Willis, 7 to 9 division; Rishi Biswas, 10 to 12 division; and Henrique Carvalho, 13 to 15 division.

Winners in the casting contest were Akash Paranilam, ages 4 to 6; Tristan Ireland, 7 to 9; Carla Ireland, 10 to 12; and Max Jemellaro, 13 to 15.

Taking honors for the largest fish overall was Karina Colianni, age 8. Way to go, Karina!

Stop by at 11 a.m. Wednesdays for crafts, Thursdays for story time, and for the "firefighter" game on Fridays.

Your child can also enjoy a museum tour with "Firefighter Tom" on Saturday at noon.

These special activities continue through August.

Summer hours at the Fire Museum of Maryland, 1301 York Road, are Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information go to or call 410-321-7500.

At its recent annual meeting, members of the Orchard Hills Community Association elected officers for 2012-2013.

They are Jennifer Fryer, president; Donnie Saine, vice-president; Stephanie Boblooch, recording secretary; Sigrid Szoke, corresponding secretary; Rosemary Carey, treasurer; Pam Burke, membership; and Laurie DeHoff, activities coordinator.

Welcome to new Orchard Hills neighbors: the Adams family on Westbury Road and the Taylor family on Malbay Drive.

The York Manor Swim Club has quite a few activities scheduled for August for kids, families and adults, including karaoke night, family movie night, adult float night, kids night and teens night and family fun day. Check the notice board at the pool for dates and times.

The swim team wrapped up the season with the Free State Championship Meet at Hillcrest Swim Club on July 23, and a swim team party on July 25.

August is also the time for our local clubs and other organizations to begin planning activities for the upcoming year — many of them kicking things off at September meetings.

As your groups become active again, let me know of meetings, events or other activities so I can share them with your neighbors.
