Danny Van Natta, son of Lynn and Mark Van Natta of Springdale was recently selected as the recipient of the Stevie Hansen Spirit Award, given annually to a member of the Cockeysville Baseball League.
This tradition started in 2007 with the 11-12 age group, then advanced to the 13-15 age group. For 2012 and future years the award returned to the 11-12 age group.
The award is in memory of Stevie Hansen — a CRC baseball player who, at the age of 7, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Stevie fought the "monster" bravely for five, and passed at age 12 in May 2007.
Danny's coach, Bill Wilson, nominated him for this year's award, noting that, "I have never had a player that tries harder than Danny. He gives 110 percent all the time, whether or team is ahead by 10 runs or behind by 10 runs — he plays the same way all the time. He never gives up and never takes an at bat or a play lightly. ... Other kids see this and respect him for this.
Wilson said Danny is, "always the first player to congratulate someone when they get a hit, score a run, or make a play in the field. Every time a run scores I turn around and Danny is walking from the bench to congratulate a player. Most importantly, Danny is also the first person to give a player a pat on the back or say 'nice try' when someone makes a mistake.
"He seems to truly believe in the team concept and supports all of his teammates the same way, regardless of whether they are a star or an average player. ... Danny is an excellent baseball player — but most importantly, he is an excellent teammate. "
What a wonderful award for a wonderful young man. Congratulations!

Would you volunteer your sewing skills to create a more home like atmosphere for Stella Maris residents? The center is working to make mealtime for residents as homey as possible. Some examples of the changes under way are colorful place mats instead of trays, colorful dishes replacing the basic white, more food choices and changing the adult "bibs" that many residents wear to attractive "dining scarves." Since there are three meals each day, a total of about 3,000 scarves are needed. Volunteers are being sought to help make them. About 1,000 more are needed — each takes about 45 minutes to make, with a sewing machine. Fabric, pattern and instructions are provided.
