The mood in the Calvert Hall locker room was loose Friday night.
And that’s as it should have been after the Cardinals trounced visiting Gilman, 77-51, in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference game.
Calvert Hall senior power forward Chris Wallace totaled 19 points and nine rebounds for Calvert Hall and teammate Drew Edwards, a junior shooting guard, added 14 points and six rebounds as the Cardinals improved to 12-3 in league play and 22-3 overall.
"I think we are doing a lot of great things, but we still have some areas we need to get better in if we want to make a deep playoff run," Calvert Hall coach John Bauersfeld said.
You couldn't easily see that against Gilman. Calvert Hall's rebounding, passing and defense was excellent.
The Cardinals started on an 8-1 run and led 14-4 after the first quarter.
Gilman (9-13, 6-9) closed to 22-15 with 1:55 remaining in the second quarter on John Fitzgerald's free throw.
That was as close as the Greyhounds would get the rest of the way.
Calvert Hall led 27-18 at halftime and began the third quarter on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes.
"Coming out in the second half, I thought we had to pick up the pace of the game," Bauersfeld said. "We swung the game to our tempo. We got a little bit sloppy (in the first half) and settled for a lot of jump shots. The game was being slowed down."
The Cardinals didn't slow down and boosted their lead to 51-29 by the end of the third quarter.
Overall, Calvert Hall shot 45 percent (32-for-71) from the field while Gilman hit only 33 percent (15-for-45) of its shots.
"We wanted to get good shots and we weren't able to do that," said Gilman coach Owen Daly, whose team also lost to the Cardinals in early January, 66-50. "They are physically tough. We didn't match their toughness. We didn't block out and limit second and third opportunities."
Freshman guard/forward Tyler Foster led Gilman with 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior forward Kai Locksley added nine points and 13 rebounds.
