Merritt Athletic Club has commenced construction on a multi-million dollar project to build an outdoor fun pool at its location on Mylander Road in Towson.
The pool could be open as early as this summer, Merritt's Regional Operations and Aquatics Manager Andrew Barranco said Wednesday.
"It's not a fixed date at the moment, but we're expecting early summer," Barranco said. "It's really going to be for our whole membership base to enjoy. We have two (indoor) pools right now at our Towson location, so this will add two outdoor pools to our complex."
According to Barranco, the main pool will be the equivalent of a six-lane pool, though it will not be set up for laps. The space will also include a smaller children's pool, and the main pool will feature two 18-foot tall slides.
"I think it shows the diversity of Merritt Athletic Club, and we're not just fitness," Barranco said. "We're a one-stop shop for all your fun, leisure and fitness needs."
Merritt features a similar outdoor fun pool at its Eldersburg location, and outdoor pools at the athletic clubs in Canton and on Fort Avenue in Locust Point, Barranco said.
Work began on the site earlier this month, and since then, interest among the members has piqued.
"There is a lot of excitement from the membership base and its starting to get out in the community as well," Barranco said. "We sent out an email to our distribution list and we're getting a lot of responses back. It's kind of cool now because we can see (it)."
As construction continues, Barranco said a webcam will be set up through the club's website to record the progress.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
