Sandy closes dozens of Baltimore County roads

Baltimore County's Emergency Management Operation is reporting that as of Tuesday morning, low-lying coastal areas of Baltimore County's east side are experiencing flooding as a result of tidal surge and the 8 a.m. high tide, all remnants of Hurricane Sandy.

In addition, officials were reporting a number of roads that are affected by storm damage; and the county announced that Dumpsters would be available at fire stations for residents to dispose of branches and other debris.

Officials said flooding in these east side communities reflects a 1- to 3-foot surge — a level that officials had predicted. The affected areas are mostly waterfront homes and roads closest to the water.

On the county's website, the emergency management office reported that, "We expect the waters to recede through the afternoon, but to rise again in the most vulnerable areas at the next high tide, about 9 p.m. tonight.

No rescues or evacuations were reported, and officials said firefighters earlier this morning went door-to-door in Dundalk's Turner Station and Water's Edge, offering to help people who wanted to move to higher ground. Twenty-eight people asked for help getting to the Eastern Technical High shelter; fire crews transported them in Fire Department vehicles.

About 50 people and seven pets were housed at Eastern Tech High at 8 a.m.

The county was reporting dozens of roads that have been affected by the storm due to fallen trees, wires down and flooded roadways. High winds will likely contribute to this situation throughout the morning. Some of these may have been resolved as of late morning, but the earlier reports indicated trouble or closures at:

Fire stations provide Dumpsters; water will be available Thursday

Also on Tuesday morning, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz announced that the county will place Dumpsters for tree debris and yard waste at select fire stations, and will allow residents to fill containers with water from fire stations beginning Thursday of this week.

The Dumpsters are for yard and tree debris only. Other materials such as damaged carpet, wallboard, gutters, damaged furniture, and home siding may be delivered to one of the county's drop-off centers.

Water will be available at all career and volunteer fire stations, though residents must bring their own containers. People can fill them with water from the station's outdoor spigots.

The Department of Public Works will place dumpsters at fire stations in hardest hit areas so that residents may dispose of storm related tree debris. Dumpsters will be available to the public at least through Nov. 4 and longer if necessary.  The locations are:

• Arbutus Volunteer Fire Station - 5200 Southwestern Boulevard

• Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Station - 900 Bowleys Quarters Road

• Eastview Fire Station - 1056 Old Northpoint Road, Dundalk

• Lutherville Volunteer Fire Station - 1609 Bellona Avenue

• Parkville Fire Station - 8530 Old Harford Road (dumpster will be on the parking lot of American Legion next door)

• Pikesville Volunteer Fire Station -  40 E. Sudbrook Road

• Liberty Road Volunteer Fire Station - 10010 Liberty Road

• Westview Fire Station - 6300 Johnnycake Road

Residents may deliver other debris to the county's drop-off centers:

• White Marsh, 6259 Days Cove Road, White Marsh, MD 21162

• Cockeysville, 201 Warren Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030

• Halethorpe, 3310 Transway Road, Halethorpe, MD 21227

The county does not provide dry ice during weather emergencies, but officials noted that several local retailers do provide dry ice, including:

• Capital Carbonic, 410-566-0853, 404 S. Caton Ave., Baltimore 21229

• AAA Ice, 410-426-1204, 6100 Belair Rd., Baltimore, 21206
