Weekend lane closures will bring new traffic pattern to Charles Street

Traffic changes on Charles Street in the Towson area this weekend will allow State Highway Administration crews to remove the roundabout at Charles Street and Bellona Avenue and install traffic lights before Monday morning's commute.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, June 8, the Charles Street bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and the right-turn loop ramp from Charles Street to Interstate-695 west (the Beltway) will be closed.

Drivers who need to reach I-695 West from northbound Charles Street will use the roundabout to Bellona Avenue Extended.

SHA is asking motorists traveling to and from the Charles Street interchange area to plan ahead for extra travel time and look ahead for police, flagmen and construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.

If traveling to downtown Towson, people should use the York Road exit (Exit 26) instead.

When construction is completed at 5 a.m. Monday morning, the following new traffic patterns will be in effect:

• A new traffic signal will control flow at the new intersection, replacing the Charles Street/Bellona Avenue/Bellona Avenue Extended roundabout;

• A new ramp at the new Charles Street/Bellona Avenue/Bellona Avenue Extended intersection to westbound I-695 and northbound I-83 will be open to traffic;

• The ramp from Bellona Avenue Extended to westbound I-695 and northbound I-83 will be closed and Bellona Avenue Extended will remain open as a two-way road for local business access only;

• A new signal will be fully activated at the ramp from westbound I-695 (Outer Loop) to Charles Street (currently in flashing mode).
