A bill set to be introduced to the Baltimore County Council next month will mandate bike racks outside new developments in downtown Towson, Councilman David Marks said Tuesday.

"Downtown Towson is on the cusp of an unprecedented building boom, and we simply need to do whatever we can to reduce traffic in the commercial core," Marks said in a statement. "We have limited space to expand our road network, so that means more bike facilities and eventually, a transit circulator."

Marks, who represents the 5th District including Towson, will introduce the legislation that requires all new construction projects except single-family houses, as well as remodeling projects that expand facilities by over 50-percent, to provide and install bicycle parking.

According to Marks, the parking must be within 150 feet of the affected building, and the design requirements for the parking areas will be set in the legislation.

Marks plans to introduce the legislation at the Monday, June 3 council meeting.
