John Carroll rising junior Kara Klages scored with three seconds remaining to lift the Baltimore All-Stars to a 13-12 victory over the New Jersey all-stars in the Under Armour Lacrosse Underclass tournament at Towson University Friday.
Baltimore trailed, 12-10, with about 3 1/2 minutes remaining in its opener until Mount de Sales rising senior Amanda Ignacio scored twice in 90 seconds to tie the score.
Klages' John Carroll teammate, rising senior Meredith Haggerty, hit the post with about 10 seconds remaining before Klages collected the rebound and fired a shot to the lower left corner to beat New Jersey goalie Kady Glynn.
"It was great to get a win against an awesome team like New Jersey," said Baltimore coach Jessica Randisi, who also coaches at Maryvale. "We did all the fancy stuff. We have to do all the simple things. We have to win draws."
Baltimore led, 3-1, 5-3, and 6-5 before New Jersey picked up its play to take the lead for the majority of the second half.
McDonogh's Megan Whittle and Mount Hebron's Jennifer Giles led Baltimore with three goals each and Ignacio and Klages contributed two goals apiece.
Baltimore took control in the third quarter, scoring six unanswered goals to turn a one-goal game into a rout.
Hereford's Jason Ashwood scored two goals during that stretch and finished with three overall.
St. Paul's Mikey Wynne led Baltimore with four goals and Shack Stanwick totaled two goals and four assists for the winners.
Offense hasn't been a problem for Baltimore, but the defense needs to tighten up for games against New England and Long Island all-stars Saturday.
"I am not too happy letting up double-digit goals again," said Baltimore coach Tom Marechek, whose team beat the Midwest all-stars, 18-16, in the opener. "We are going to be in trouble if allow that many goals tomorrow. We need to possess the ball more."
