Ridge Ruxton School and West Towson Elementary were on alert for about 90 minutes Monday afternoon after someone reported seeing a person with a gun, but police said they found no gun or subject after an exhaustive search.

Baltimore County police spokeswoman Julia Hardgrove said police had received a call shortly after 1 p.m. from a person saying they saw someone with a gun near the schools, which share a campus along North Charles Street in Towson.

The "alert" status is "a step down from a lockdown," she said. School officials lock doors from the inside and monitor the exterior of the building, but classes and activities inside continue as normal.

During a lockdown, people must be clear from the halls, turn off the lights and take other precautions that are not taken during an alert, she said.

Students were dismissed on time, though buses initially were not allowed to access the schools and instead parked at the county school system's Greenwood property across the street, schools spokesman Mychael Dickerson said.

Reporter Colin Campbell contributed to this story.
