A young girl was injured but is expected to survive after someone fired a gun into a van with three others inside, Baltimore County police said. The van was stopped at an Overlea traffic light Monday night.
A two-year-old girl was struck in the head and face by shrapnel but no one else was injured in the shooting shortly before 10:30 p.m. near north-bound Kenwood Avenue at Lillian Holt Drive, police said.
The victims inside the Dodge minivan told officers that a dark-colored vehicle pulled up next to the van and fired several shots into the vehicle. Police did not identify the victims for safety concerns, or say how they are related, but said investigators believe that this was not a random incident.
A police spokesman declined to say why investigators believe the group was targeted.
David Waddell, who lives on Kenwood Avenue, across from where the shooting occurred, said he and his friends were in the front living room of the house when the said he heard four distinct "pops." One friend asked if it was firecrackers but Waddell said, "I know what gunshots sound like."
Waddell said he said knew one of the passengers and believed the group had just left a nearby liquor store. Then, about 30 feet in front of his home, he said he heard four shots.
Outside, he saw the dark-colored car speed off. The minivan remained, its windows shattered and the little girl seated in the back seat. Some dark glass remained in the road shoulder Tuesday afternoon.
Waddell said he then called police.
Police said there was a 40-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl, and a 19-year-old man inside the car with the little girl. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The victims told police the shooter's vehicle left the scene, turning right onto Lillian Holt Drive.
The county's violent crimes unit is investigating. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call police at 410-887-6286 or 410-307-2020 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
