Rotunda Theatre operator Ira Miller will be running the resurrected Pikes Theatre when it begins showing movies this summer.

Miller took over the Rotunda in 2009, adding a third screen the following year and a fourth in July 2012. He said he hoped to open the new Pikes in late July or early August. The new theater will have two screens and show first-run films, he said.

The theater building, which opened in 1937, has housed a succession of restaurants since the last film was shown there in 1983. The marquee remains above the entrance off Reisterstown Road, but most traces of the building's near-half-century history as a theater have long vanished.

The Baltimore County Council recently approved a zoning change to once again allow a movie theater at the location. Restaurant owner Wil Reich has said his Pikes Diner & Crab House will remain operating in part of the building.
