MAC instructor leads fitness class to 'Save the Girls' [Lutherville-Timonium]

"Save the Girls" is a slogan you might have heard especially during October, Breast Cancer Awareness month. Thanks to The Tyanna Foundation, Save the Girls has come to mean generous community support for breast cancer patients in the Baltimore area. On Oct. 10, the Maryland Athletic Club (MAC) in Timonium teamed up with the Tyanna Foundation in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The basketball court at the MAC was transformed into a sea of pink as approximately 100 participants prepared to sweat for a good cause. The MAC Instructor Team, including fitness instructor Anne O'Brien, led fitness classes in an effort to raise money for a cause near and dear to their hearts.

Tyanna Foundation was founded by Anne O'Brien and her four sisters 15 years ago in honor of their mother, Tyanna Barre O'Brien, who passed away from breast cancer at the age of 48. This entirely volunteer organization donates all proceeds from Baltimore events to the Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy Hospital. Anne's four other sisters established Tyanna branches in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Georgia and South Carolina, where each has resided.

In conjunction with the Body Pump class at the MAC, members and their guests had the opportunity to try a host of classes from Les Mills, Beyond Barre and Beach Body, as well as participate in a raffle to raise money for Tyanna Foundation. For a $5 raffle ticket, guests could win one of three gift baskets filled with items donated by local businesses. The raffle baskets were a hit and included knockout prizes such as a signed Ravens 2012 Superbowl Championship ball, gourmet restaurant gift cards and fitness gear.

On the morning of Oct. 25, the MAC and Tyanna continued to inspire fitness buffs and raise awareness with an event called Sweating for the Sisters, an outdoor Bokwa class held at Hard Rock Café in Baltimore. According to Anne, Bokwa is "similar to a Zumba class, but the movements are in the shape of letters of the alphabet. Group fitness classes, like Bokwa and BodyPump, relay the Tyanna Foundation's message that weight management and breast cancer health are interrelated."
