With construction underway on the new elementary school at the site of Mays Chapel Park in Timonium, Baltimore County Public School officials are inviting the community to suggest a name for the school.
“A goal for this school is for it to be a truly community-oriented school, one in which collaboration with parents, teachers, students and the community is an important and beneficial hallmark,” Steve Coco, the school’s first principal, said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to hearing from voices across our area through the process of considering and selecting just the right name for our new school.”
According to a BCPS news release, the community’s suggestions must meet the school board’s criteria for consideration. Schools may be named after a community, subdivision or street where the school is located, the geographic location of the school, a significant landmark near the school, or a deceased, prominent person who made an “outstanding contribution of service” to the county, state, or country, officials said in the statement.
Beginning Monday, nominations can be submitted by any member of the community to firstname.lastname@example.org. Nominations can be submitted until 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, and the two top choices will be submitted for review by Superintendent Dallas Dance before they’re presented to the Board of Education.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
