Man critically injured after breaking up fight outside Essex bar

A man is hospitalized in critical condition after he helped break up a fight outside of an Essex bar Monday night, Baltimore County Police said.

Officers found the unconscious man when responding to Sylvester's Tavern in the 7300 block of Golden Ring Road around 10:30 p.m., police said. George Lawrence McGraw, 44, of the 500 block of Franklin Avenue in Essex, faces assault charges in connection with the attack.

McGraw is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

An early investigation revealed that the suspect and another person got into an argument inside the bar and the two later went out to the parking lot and began to fight, police said. The victim and several other people broke up the fight.

Police said the suspect then approached the victim as he was walking away and struck him in the head before fleeing the scene in his vehicle.

Online court records do not list an attorney for McGraw.
