Danyah Iman is no stranger to the Baltimore Spelling Bee. The March 15 competition at Towson University was her fourth appearance spelling words in front of an audience.

Last year, the Catonsville resident took home second place.

This year, the seventh grader at Al-Rahmah School on Johnnycake Road won the competition with the correct spelling of "embayment".

"I was very excited and happy to win," said Danyah, whose younger brother, Shaheer Iman, came in second.

Shaheer, who is home-schooled, took home the regional Spelling Bee first place trophy at age 7 in 2012.

"It was the best moment in the Spelling Bee when it was only my brother and I on stage, because I knew that all of our hard work studying had paid off," Danyah said.

Danyah said studying for the competition was a family effort. Her parents help both her and her brother.

"I was nervous on stage but it was also fun, too," Danyah said of the event, in which more than 60 students took part.

She'll represent Baltimore County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 27 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor.
