Mount Saint Joseph High School named a new assistant principal Thursday.

Gregory McDivitt, a 1986 graduate of Mount St. Joseph, will step up to fill the spot of previous assistant principal David Norton, who has been serving as principal since early February following the sudden resignation of former principal Barry Fitzpatrick at the end of January.

McDivitt has a Master of Science in biology from Towson University and has been teaching for 23 years and previously taught freshman biology, genetics and advanced placement biology at the school, a Thursday press release said.

The Catonsville resident organizes many outdoor school activities including an annual ski trip and white water rafting trip and coaches the water polo and swim teams.

“As a graduate of the school, Greg knows what we expect from our students, faculty, staff and administrators," Mount St. Joseph President George Andrews said in the release.

"I strongly believe that his history with the school, as well as knowledge and understanding of the values upon which it was founded, will serve him well in his new role," he said.

“Mount Saint Joseph is a dynamic place of learning, and I feel privileged each day to be able to work with such a dedicated faculty and such engaging students," McDivitt said in the release. "Through my work I hope to ensure that Mount Saint Joseph thrives and continues to grow as a place where every member of the school community is committed to excellence.”

McDivitt will begin his service as assistant principal July 1.
