Longtime Catonsville resident Helen Cavey will mark her 100th birthday Friday, April 12.

Her father, James Streit, worked as a woolen mill supervisor so the family made frequent moves through the southern part of the country.

As an adolescent, Mrs. Cavey attended Ellicott City High School.

Through a mutual interest in church music, she met her future husband, George Cavey.

In 1936, Dr. John Nesbitt, pastor of Catonsville Presbyterian Church, married the couple in the bride's home on Frederick Avenue.

Their daughter, Barbara Cavey Chauvin, was born in 1943.

The couple bought a house in Catonsville and became active in the community.

They opened Cavey Florist Supply in 1949.

In addition to working in the business, Mrs. Cavey taught Sunday school and joined the Catonsville Soroptimist Club, which she served as president.

Their marriage ended in 2004, after 68 years, with Mr. Cavey's death.

His widow has resided at Ridgeway Manor Nursing Home for the past nine years.
