Western Tech among magazine's top 500 high schools in U.S.

Western School of Technology and Environmental Science was one of only five Baltimore County Public Schools that made U.S. News & World Report's "Best High Schools" list of the top public high schools.

Two of the five, Eastern Technical (7 in Maryland) and Towson (8 in Maryland) high schools, earned "gold medal" status as being among the top 500 schools on the survey, based on a high degree of student college readiness.

Western Tech (34), Loch Raven High School (35) and Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts (40) earned "silver medal" status.

Rankings were based on data from more than 19,400 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia that included state reading and math assessment scores, demographic information, college-readiness measurements such as AP tests, and other factors.

All five schools were also among the 10 from the county named to the magazine's list in 2013.

The magazine also published "Best High Schools" lists in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012.
