Longtime Catonsville High softball coach Billy Nelson has been hired as the new Athletic Director at Catonsville High.
Principal Dr. William Heiser hired Nelson, who has been teaching Functional Academics at Catonsville High for 20 years, on Oct. 1.
“I love teaching, but I’m ready for a new challenge,” Nelson said.
The 1988 graduate of Catonsville High has been head softball coach for the past 19 years, but must give up that position to fulfill his Athletic Director duties.
Nelson coached the Comets to Baltimore County softball championships in 2003 and 2005 and guided three teams to the state tournament’s final four.
He has also coached allied bowling for the past 10 years and has previously coached the golf and varsity boys basketball teams.
Nelson was named Baltimore County Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, Baltimore County Softball Coach of the Year, and All-Metro Softball Coach of the Year.
“Mr. Nelson has served Catonsville High School as an excellent teacher and coach for many years,” Dr. Heiser said. “I am confident that Billy will be a great leader for our coaches and student-athletes.”
Nelson lives in Catonsville with his wife, Lisa, and two daughters, Brooke, 11, and Riley, 9.
He will take over for interim athletic director Eric Hastings, who replaced Dave Lane, who left the position after eight years.
“The job for me is helping the coaches as much as I can to make their job run smoothly,” Nelson said. “The organization part of it, and just trying to balance it all, is what I love.”Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
