York Road closed in Cockeysville, area evacuated after gas main break

York Road was closed between Ashland Road and Wight Avenue in Cockeysville and nearby businesses evacuated as utility crews repaired a gas main break Monday afternoon, Baltimore County officials said.

A leak was reported in a 4-inch main about 2:35 p.m., county police and fire spokeswoman Julia Hargrove said. Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. officials were on the scene making repairs.

BGE officials expected repairs to take several hours, utility spokeswoman Rachael Lighty said. Crews were investigating what may have caused the leak.

Buildings within a quarter of a mile of the leak were evacuated, county officials wrote in a Twitter message.

Nearby businesses include the Ashland Marketplace Shopping Center, Valley View Farms and the Holiday Inn Express Hunt Valley.
