PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Carly Napora, McDonogh

The area's top line defender excelled in every way for a team that allowed just 6.9 goals per game. Quick and fearless, Napora stood up to 11 charging foes this season and took 43 charges during her Eagles career.

The senior had the quick feet and controlled stick to contain attackers one-on-one, but she also had the field sense and anticipation to slip easily into the slides. Tenacious in practice as well as in games, Napora challenged herself to improve each day, and that helped her play a much bigger game than her physical stature might indicate.

COACHES OF THE YEAR: Mary Bartel and Lisa Costello, Notre Dame Prep

The Blazers weren't on the radar in preseason after going 7-10 a year ago, but Bartel and Costello turned them into a 13-7 team as they rose to No. 6 in the rankings and pushed No. 1 John Carroll to overtime before falling in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference semifinals.

Bartel said this group simply needed to be "fostered to maturity," and that showed as it steadily improved. The players grew into a true team that could not have given more in the John Carroll game. While the loss was difficult, the coaches said this was one of the most rewarding experiences of their careers.
