All-Baltimore County: Girls basketball

The Comets needed a leader, and their 5-foot-8 junior guard stepped up to provide that leadership in every possible way.

A strong ballhandler who can play like a forward, Williams excelled at feeding her teammates or taking opponents off the dribble.

She had her best performances in some of the toughest games, including a 15-point, 10-rebound, six-assist afternoon in a 61-51 upset of Western at the Basketball Academy. Williams also scored 25 points in a win over Dulaney and 27 in the county-title victory over Randallstown. She led the Comets in points (17.3), rebounds (4.5) and assists (7.3).

When the season started, Mohler wasn't sure how his team would fare. He had lost two potential starters - one to track and another to transfer - and had little depth.

The arrival of freshman Zoey Whittington helped, but Mohler still needed his starters - especially guard Shamika Williams - to play as many minutes as possible. Still, Mohler molded his team into one of the best in the area.

The Comets jumped into the poll with an upset of Western at the Basketball Academy and climbed as high as No. 6 before Western got its revenge in the regional final. "I haven't had to take a timeout all year and talk about playing hard," he said.
