PERFORMER OF THE YEAR: Jermol Dix, Western Tech

The senior helped carrythe Wolverines to their firststate title. The UMES-boundDix won the Class 1A 300hurdles despite tripping overthe last one and falling. Hehad enough presence ofmind to get up and lungeover the finish line.

Dix's work in sprints, hurdlesand relays helped WesternTech pull off an impressivesweep of the BaltimoreCounty, Class 1A North regionaland state titles. Hecame through with big victoriesthroughout the seasonand helped Western Techcome up with the points itneeded to be successful.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Shedrick Elliott, Western Tech

He has played a major rolein the turnaround of theWestern Tech program sincejoining the team as a coach18 months ago. Elliott helpedWestern Tech -- whichdoesn't even have a track --go from an also-ran to a powerhousein Class 1A.

The Wolverines won thisyear's Class 1A state title,and Elliott uses differentstrategies depending on thesituation. At one meet, hedidn't run any of his athletesin relays to concentrate onindividual events. He alsotook them to highly competitivemeets to test themagainst elite performers.
