PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Patrick Blair, Calvert Hall
Blair was the best player onthe area's best team, as heled the No. 1 Cardinals (27-7)to their fourth consecutiveMaryland InterscholasticAthletic Association A Conferencechampionship.
The junior shortstop did itall. Blair led the Cardinals inall of the major offensive categoriesexcept for doublesand anchored the infieldwith his good hands, armand range. He routinelymade big plays, whetherwith the bat, in the field oreven stealing home to fuelhis team in a playoff game.
Blair, who is a three-yearstarter, led the Cardinals inbatting (.462), hits (43), runs(35), triples (five), homers(seven), RBIs (34) and stolenbases (21).
COACH OF THE YEAR: Tony Maggard, Patapsco
Maggard's Patriots made ahabit of upsetting the favoritesin the postseason to earna berth in the school's firststate final. They lost in the1992 state semifinals in theironly other appearance in thefinal four.
The seventh-year coach ledthe Patriots to the Class 3ANorth regional title byknocking off defendingchampion Catonsville, 9-8, in11 innings. Next up wasthen-No. 5 Centennial in thestate semifinals, where Patapscoscored four runs inthe top of the sixth en routeto a stunning, 8-6 victory.
The Patriots then ran intoace Mike Boyden and La Platain the final. Boyden tosseda four-hitter with 14 strikeoutsin an 8-2 win for theWarriors' first state title. Patapsco,which had won 15 ina row before the state final,finished 19-3 and has gone36-5 over the past two seasons.Maggard is 83-45 in sevenseasons.
