Mr. Bernarding was born in Baltimore and raised on Parkside Drive. He was a 1961 graduate of Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School, where he had studied printing.
He worked for 30 years at the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington before retiring in 1998. For the past decade, until retiring a second time in 2008, he had been a printer at Monotype Composition in Baltimore.
Mr. Bernarding was a lifelong duckpin bowler, both professionally and in league bowling.
"He won the pro tour in Stratford, Conn., in 1977, and was named bowler of the year for 1976-1977, 1977-1978 and 1978-1979 by the Baltimore Professional Duckpin Association," said his wife of 16 years, the former Dale Nichols. "He was inducted into the Baltimore Duckpin Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1996 for superior performance."
He was also a member of the Baltimore Pro Duckpin League Hall of Fame, family members said.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Glyndon, where a Mass of Christian burial was offered Saturday.
Also surviving are three sons, Jay Be F. Bernarding Jr. of Dublin, Ohio, Joseph M. Bernarding of Eldersburg and John M. Bernarding of Hagerstown; a stepdaughter, Teresa C. Chitikov of Timonium; and four grandchildren. His wife of 30 years, the former Patricia Azzarello, died in 1992.
