Brian Maurice Savage, 21, and the boy's mother were living together in an apartment in the 1400 block of Hadwick Drive, where the woman left the toddler in Savage's care Sunday afternoon while she went to work, said Bill Toohey, a spokesman for the Baltimore County Police Department.
Two other people were in the apartment at the time, but police said Savage was the only person supervising the child, Cameron Justin Williams.
Savage told police he was in bed with the boy some seven hours after his mother's departure and noticed that he was unresponsive. Savage called 911 and Cameron was taken to Franklin Square Hospital Center in White Marsh, where he was pronounced dead.
Savage said the injuries might have occurred while he was "roughhousing" with the toddler and rolled on top of him.
An autopsy Monday determined that the toddler's internal injuries included damage to his lung, liver and spleen, as well as bruises and cuts on his head and body.
Savage was arrested early Tuesday while being interviewed at police headquarters, Toohey said, and was ordered held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center. Although police said he was living with the boy and his mother in Essex, Savage gave his address as the 3800 block of Kilburn Road in Randallstown.
The identity of Cameron's mother was withheld because she is a witness.

kennyangel1 you hit the nail on the head. People are heartless and greedy and i find it a struggle sometimes to find or see the good in people these days. A very sad reality of this story is that it will buried under tomorrows story of a shooting or body found or even another child's death. Are we all so desensitized to violence and murder that stories like these make up our daily headlines and many people don't even bat an eye? We as people have chosen our path and it's one that doesn't have a cheery ending folks. God bless the parents of this child.
