Westowne Elementary students make a screen gem

Among the 22 entries from elementary schools in the BGE service territory entered in the company's second annual Wires Down Video Challenge, one stood out as the best in Baltimore County.

That was the entry from Westowne Elementary School.

The efforts by Westowne fifth-graders Coen DeWalt, Sydney Temple, Hazel Montgomery-Walsh and Mathew Wright earned the school on Harlem Lane a $1,000 Star Gem Award from BGE.

The students were aided in their efforts by the guidance of Abby Buecker, a reading specialist at the school, and Liz Getsinger, a technology integration teacher at Westowne.

Their video, which warns of the hazards from downed power lines, was chosen based on creativity, adaptation of BGE's original "Wires Down" television commercial this fall, safety and teamwork.
