Baltimore County Police are investigating an incident in which 5,000 gallons of fuel was stolen from Warthen Fuel Co. on Benson Avenue between 1 and 2 a.m. Monday.

"Essentially, what happened was, they cut the fence to Atlantic Mack (trucks), which is the business that backs up to Warthen and used that access to get to Warthen," Cpl. Cathy Batton said Friday.

"And they took 5,000 gallons of fuel out of a tank which is worth approximately $20,000," Batton said.

Batton said a theft of this magnitude would require advance planning and specialized skills to carry out.

"It was definitely not a crime of opportunity," she said. "It takes a lot of forethought, a lot of planning.

"They would have needed the technical knowledge to transport the gasoline safely," Batton said. "And they would have had to have a vehicle big enough (to transport it)."

"Obviously this business was targeted," she said.

Police are working to gather information and determine suspects, but the time of the crime combined with the location in a commercial and industrial area has made the investigation difficult.

"There are fewer witnesses about at that time (of the morning)," Batton said. "They'll do a canvass of the surrounding area, check surveillance video, check with the local businesses.

Batton said police are continuing to investigate the case and ask anyone with information to contact the Wilkens Police Station at 410-887-0872.
