Brush fire burns 4 to 5 acres at park in Baltimore Highlands

A brush fire Friday evening burned 4 to 5 acres at Southwest Area Park, a large park in Baltimore Highlands near Baltimore County's border with Anne Arundel County and Baltimore City.

The fire, reported just before 5:30 p.m., did not cause any injuries or damage any buildings, said Lt. Paul Massarelli, a Baltimore County Fire Department spokesman.

"It sounded a lot worse than it actually was," he said.

"There was some concern originally it would spread to an industrial area with tractor-trailers parked," he said, but firefighters were able to keep it within the park.

The fire was brought under control at 6:48 p.m. Massarelli had no information on a possible cause.

About 120 firefighters responded to the blaze, he said. Additional units were called because the fire was "burning really well" at first, heightening concerns about the trailers in the industrial area.

Approximately 37 firefighting units were dispatched from Baltimore, Anne Arundel and Howard counties and the city, he said.
