The home furnishings store Nouveau Contemporary Goods is leaving Belvedere Square after 10 years and moving back to its roots in Mount Vernon, co-owners Steve Appel and Lee Whitehead announced this week.
They said they have leased 2,300 square feet of retail space at 10 W. Eager St., and plan to reopen the store in late October. Their 10-year lease at Belvedere Square expires at the end of the year, Appel said.
They are also changing the store's name to Nouveau Home & Interior Design. They also own a design studio that serves corporate and residential clients. Its name, Whitehead & Appel is being changed to Nouveau Interior Design.
The store, at 514 E. Belvedere Ave., has anchored the north side of Belvedere Square since 2004, when it moved from the 500 block of North Charles Street downtown, where it had been since 1987, a year after Appel and Whitehead, friends since chldhood, first opened in Howard County's historic Savage Mill.
Appel said he and Whitehead, both downtown residents, want to be closer to some 6,000 luxury apartments that have opened in the Mount Vernon area in the past four years —many of them rented by young people and empty nesters.
"I really feel like we're missing a lot of the apartment business," Appel said. "It's not a slight to Belvedere Square whatsoever."
The new location is next to City Cafe, with parking nearby.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
