Two more people shot in Baltimore amid rash of shootings

Two more people were shot late Saturday, continuing a violent weekend in which one person was killed a block from the Preakness Stakes and six others were wounded by gunfire.

The homicide and eight non-fatal shootings since late Friday occurred in neighborhoods across the city including in Mount Vernon, Waverly and areas of East and Northeast Baltimore.

About 10:15 p.m. Saturday, a man walked into an area hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot, police said. Officers believe the shooting occurred in the 1900 block of E. Lafayette Ave. in the Broadway East section of East Baltimore.

Police said the victim did not provide details about the shooting and is listed in good condition at the hospital.

About 11:20 p.m. Saturday, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to his head in 900 block of N. Caroline St. in the Gay Street section of East Baltimore. The victim was taken to an area hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Homicide detectives are investigating because the severity of the man's injuries.

Police Sunday also identified James Lee Butler, 27, of Baltimore as the man who was killed in 5100 block of Elmer Ave. — about a block from Saturday's Preakness festivities in the Central Park Heights section of Northwest Baltimore.

Police said they believe that the shooting was unrelated to the Preakness.

Meanwhile, police provided more details about the Saturday afternoon shooting in 200 block of W. Monument St. in the Mount Vernon section of the city. Police said the victim is a landlord who was shot in the leg by an unknown man in an attempted robbery.

Police said the victim was trying to collect rent from a tenant at the time.
