Sewer overflows at Back River facility

Up to 1.3 million gallons of partially-treated wastewater overflowed into storm drains and into the Back River, Baltimore City reported Wednesday evening.

The overflow was apparently caused by contractor error, disrupting electrical service to the Back River Wastewater Treatment Facility for approximately 20 minutes Wednesday, according to a statement from the city.

"That amount is about one-half of one percent of the total daily amount of wastewater processed there," the city statement read.

Baltimore County Health and Public Works departments and the Maryland Department of the Environment are aware of the incident, the city said.
