Baltimore firefighter injured in fire in 'Mill Hill Deck of Cards' homes

Baltimore firefighters battled a fire in a vacant rowhome along Wilkens Avenue Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out at a vacant rowhouse in the 2600 block of Wilkens Ave., between South Pulaski and Payson streets, fire officials said.

“There is heavy smoke coming from the second floor and roof,” according to Blair Skinner, a fire department spokeswoman.

The block, known as the Mill Hill Deck of Cards, is Baltimore’s longest unbroken line of rowhouses.Built in 1912, the houses were originally sold for $1,250 each.

One firefighter was injured with non-life threatening injuries, according to Skinner, who said the firefighter had not been transported to a local hospital.
